Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO) has provided music education through orchestral programs and performance opportunities of the highest caliber since 1946. But CYSO is more than exceptional performances; it is music education, music outreach, and special events.

Each year, the organization serves nearly 450 talented Chicago-area musicians ages 7-18 through five core orchestras and supplemental programs that include chamber music ensembles, music theory and composition. CYSO musicians experience superb orchestral and chamber music instruction from Chicago’s most respected professional musicians, perform in the world’s greatest concert halls and gain the self-confidence and discipline necessary for a successful future.

CYSO also reaches 2,500 Chicago Public School students and educators each year through its Music Pathways program. Music Pathways provides CPS elementary school students in 1st through 4th grades with sequential, standards-based activities over a three year time span. The program features peer-to-peer music experiences by bringing CYSO musicians into the schools to teach and perform. It provides professional development activities for CPS teachers on how to incorporate music into their classroom curriculum. It also grants significant financial aid for private instrumental lessons to current CYSO students who reside in Chicago, attend any Chicago Public School and demonstrate financial need.

100% of CYSO graduates pursue college studies at the most prestigious universities and conservatories in the nation. They then go on to become professional musicians in the world’s finest orchestras and music ensembles. They can also be found as teachers, community leaders, doctors, lawyers, business professionals and entrepreneurs. Most importantly, whether or not CYSO students continue their music studies after graduating high school, they leave with a strong sense of discipline, accomplishment, confidence, self-esteem, and a deep appreciation for music and the arts.
