While our spaces may be empty much of the time these days, this fall seemed like the perfect time to do a little beautification on the CYSO spaces—including a brand new mural in our entryway to Suite 833 that will be painted over the next few weeks by artist Javier Suárez.
Javier is a multi-disciplinary artist from Chicago. Over the course of his 10 year career, he’s worked on everything from magazine creative direction, comic book illustration, and has curated arts and performance events all over the city. Much of his work emphasizes community, pop culture, and diversity. The CYSO team was immediately drawn to the energy and sense of community his work conveys—two themes that we pride ourselves on as well!
Javier is invested in offering creative opportunities to other up and coming artists, and will be joined on this project by Chloe Wallace, and Afro-Latina visual artist and photographer from Waukegan, and Gabriel Ramirez, a Chicago cartoonist.
As mural design and painting gets underway over the next few months, there are exciting opportunities for students, alumni, and CYSO community to get involved as well!
Submit your photo to be featured in the mural
This new mural is designed to inspire current and future CYSO students and foster an environment where all young musicians feel celebrated. We believe in the power of representation and hope to create a mural truly reflects the CYSO community. In order to make that happen, we need your help!
The mural will include a crowd of young musicians, and we want to feature you! CYSO students, and alums are invited to submit photos of yourself and your instrument to aid Javier as he’s creating the mural’s design. Submissions are due Thursday, November 12, 2020. Click here for information about how you can submit reference photos of yourself.
Apply to be a Mural Assistant
In the spirit of offering opportunities for young creatives to grow and learn new skills, we’re also opening up 1-2 mural assistant positions to current CYSO high school-age students. As a mural assistant, you’ll have the opportunity to join the team on-site on painting days to help prep the wall, painting and mixing colors, and documenting the project. Applcations are due Thursday, November 12, 2020.
