Pharez Whitted Selected as Chicago Tribune “Chicagoan of the Year”

CYSO Director of Jazz Pharez Whitted was selected as one of the Chicago Tribune‘s Chicagoans of the Year. In the article by Howard Rheich, Whitted discusses the ups and downs he experienced in 2016, citing his new position at CYSO as one of the highlights.

Speaking of the impressive commitment he’s already seen from the student musicians of CYSO’s new Jazz Orchestra, Whitted said, “It’s a mix of really enthusiastic young people from various backgrounds. We have some students from the city; we have some from the rural areas… Some travel by train…and it takes them an hour, an hour-and-a-half to get there, then get back home again. And they’re there every rehearsal night.”
