CYSO’s Chamber Music program, under the direction of Dr. Donald DeRoche, is a selective program open to students participating in CYSO’s Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra who are interested in training in the art of small ensemble playing. The ensemble curriculum is comprehensive and includes weekly professional coaching, two CYSO’s Chamberpalooza recitals and other special performance opportunities.
The ensembles also have the opportunity to participate in CYSO’s Masterclass Series when the masterclass features professional chamber groups. Past masterclasses have featured instruction from groups such as Gaudete Brass, Canadian Brass, Pacifica String Quartet, Amelia Piano Trio, the University of Illinois Woodwind Quartet, and Third Coast Percussion. CYSO chamber ensembles also have the opportunity to participate in various national and regional competitions.
CYSO Chamber Music ensembles have recently performed for First Lady Michelle Obama, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, the 2012 Nobel Laureates, and perform regularly on the Introductions series on WFMT, Chicago’s Classical Radio Station. CYSO Chamber Music ensembles have also performed for the inaugurations of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias; have been featured on live broadcasts on the national NPR program From the Top and WFMT’s Impromptu series. They have been seen on ABC, NBC, CBS and WGN newscasts; performed the national anthem for the WNBA Chicago Sky; and placed in the Junior Division of the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.
All members of Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra, in addition to other musicians who specifically audition for Chamber Music, may be selected to participate in the Chamber Music program.
