The Noteworthy Night: Game On! | February 6, 2016
The Noteworthy Night was held on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Chicago’s Four Seasons Hotel. The event was chaired by Sheila C. Johnson, CYSO alumna, and Vice Chairman and Owner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, President and Managing Partner of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, and CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts, and featured Wayne Messmer narrating a performance of Casey at the Bat accompanied by CYSO’s Symphony Orchestra. The evening’s lead sponsors included First Hospitality Group, Salamander Hotels & Resorts and Ms. Johnson, and Jenner & Block and Ross Bricker.
“The generosity of our sponsors and donors never ceases to amaze me, and I cannot thank our hardworking gala host committee and board of directors and trustees enough for making tonight’s event happen. Sports and music are a natural combination, and having Wayne Messmer and his legendary voice with us tonight is also a dream come true,” said CYSO Executive Director Joshua Simonds. “All funds raised tonight directly benefits 3,000 students across greater Chicago, and helps to ensure that CYSO continues to be a leader in arts and music education.”
Highlights of the evening included sports-themed musical performances by CYSO’s Symphony Orchestra under the baton of CYSO Music Director Allen Tinkham. The orchestra performed themes from famous sports movies, Ives’ dramatic “Yale-Princeton Football Game” with a kazoo chorus provided by the audience, and an ode to “stadium rock.” In the centerpiece of the evening’s entertainment, well-known singer and speaker Wayne Messmer narrated Casey at the Bat, with musical accompaniment provided by Symphony Orchestra. Messmer doned a Casey-themed Mudville baseball jersey, and the young musicians wore baseball caps as they performed.
Presentation of the 2016 Note of Excellence Award followed. CYSO Executive Director Joshua Simonds presented the award to Frank Baiocchi of Polk Bros. Foundation. The foundation was recognized for its commitment to improving the quality of life for Chicago families and in particular, its support of CYSO students since 1990 through its Arts Access and Learning Programs.
