WFMT to Air The Children of Willesden Lane, Featuring Encore Chamber Orchestra

Last fall, CYSO’s Encore Chamber Orchestra had the opportunity to participate in a performance of Mona Golabek’s The Children of Willesden Lane produced by Urban Gateways at Harris Theater. This critically-acclaimed one-woman show based on the book by Golabek and Lee Cohen, tells the true story of Golabek’s mother, Lisa Jura, who fled the Nazis as a child and went on to become a pianist. Encore also played with Golabek on the recording of The Children of Willesden Lane, which has now been turned into a radio play that will air on WFMT this Wednesday, May4 at 10 pm in honor of Mother’s Day.
The Children of Willesden Lane focuses on Jura’s experience fleeing Vienna as part of the Kindertransport just as Hitler’s armies were invading Austria in 1938. She settled in London and persevered against tremendous odds to achieve her dream of becoming a concert pianist and, through her music, became a symbol of hope for other displaced children. During the performance’s emotional finale, members of Encore Chamber Orchestra appeared on stage to perform the Grieg Piano Concerto in A Minor with Ms. Golabek as a tribute to the many children lost to the Holocaust.
